During the week of July 13, the students from the Kathy Hansen School of dance had an opportunity to compete and perform at a National competition in Atlantic City, N.J.

During a Regional competition at the Anderson Center in June, the dance team performed 35 choreographed routines that earned them an opportunity to move on to the Nationals.

With 21 choreographed routines to present at the Nationals, the students placed exceptionally well. "They did really well," said Kathy Hansen, owner and instructor at the dance studio.

Working with Kathy was her daughter, JoEllen. This young instructor choreographed the modern Bamboo piece and a Drumbone Tap piece. "JoEllen has a lot of young, good and fresh ideas," said Kathy. JoEllen, who has a B.A. in jazz, will be teaching tap at Binghamton University this year.

The mother and daughter instruction led the students from Kathy Hansen's School of dance to place in the highest ranks at the National competition.

With the highest achievement being the High Point Gold, Kathy's team achieved four High Point Golds, 13 Golds, and three High Point Silvers. The group also received high score for their tap group, high score for Modern, and a Diamond Award for achieving a High Point Gold for the dance off.

The Diamond Award included $1,000. "The students received many trophies, but liked the money the best," added Kathy.

For individual competition, Mia Gatto, who is 14 years old, was the third runner up for the title 'Miss Dance'.

The group also had five girls, Mia Gatto, Alicia Walker, Alayna Baldwin, Whitney Baldwin and Nicolette Wike, recognized by talent scouts and they will be dancing with a group at Radio City Music Hall in September, and during half-time at a New York Nicks game in February.

The competition earned many trophies, but the best part of all, according to Kathy Hansen, is that the girls received exposure and were able to compete against dancers from larger cities.

Students that participated in the competition include Alayn, Gina, Natali, Nicole, and Whitney Baldwin, Noel Baylor, Morgan Brocious, Chrissy Carlson, Whitney Coon, Lauren Cote, Mattea Cronk, Saralin Davis, Jessie Deemie, Chelsea Dodge, Kristen and Taylor Donnelly, Becky DuVarney, Mia Gatto, Kristy Hansen, Amanda Holochak and Brenda Houston.

Also, Leanne Kies, Colleen Koman, Kaitlin Maynard, Samantha Mertson, Elise Morrison, Karen Nagle, Meghan Pass, Tammy and Victoria Peters, Tina Reisenauer, Jessica Ripic, Sarah Salitrynski, Christina Shaylor, Hadley Singler, Kimberly Sisti, Tessa Skiff, Christie Testa, Britney Wainwright, Alisha Walker, Nicolette Wike, Ashley Wilcox and Rose Zunic.
